As a medical anthropologist, I use concepts and methods from sociocultural anthropology to explore social, cultural, and political dimensions of illness, medicine, and care. I also work closely with colleagues in medicine and other fields, on interdisciplinary health research teams. My research has focused on a variety of topics relating to medical technology, medical education, and medical practice -- including fetal ultrasound imaging, dialysis, end-of-life medical decision-making, advance care planning, the teaching of "culture" within medical education, and the role of "standardized patients" in clinical training. For the past fifteen years, much of my research has focused on dementia and care. I joined the faculty of the University of Toronto in 2019.
