Currently I teach English, Literature and IB Theory of Knowledge at Narrabundah College in the ACT. After years of working within the HSC system, navigating the Australian Curriculum has provided some great opportunities to work within a different curriculum.I am also studying to become a Teacher Librarian.Some history:I taught English and Society & Culture at a senior campus on Sydney's Northern Beaches for 15 years. My students achieved strong results and most students elected to further their studies at university level. While I am proud of their academic results and the role I played in developing their skills, it is the strong relationships that we shared that are my greatest achievements. My expertise lies in Society & Culture with the results in this subject improving considerably in the time that I taught it. The quality of the Personal Interest Projects improved as did the quality of the resources provided to the students. 80% of our cohort regularly achieved results over 80% while it is rare that any student scored lower than 70%. For many of these students, Society & Culture is their highest mark in the HSC. In this role I developed a range of different assessment tools and introduced a more formative assessment style to the HSIE Faculty.In 2015, after marking for 10 years, I was appointed as a HSC Senior Marker for the Common paper for English, charged with being a part of the team that develops the marking kit and then managing a team of 8 markers to ensure the accuracy, reliability and consistency of the process. Consequently I lead the Marking process for this section at FSC refining the summative marking process at the school level.In 2017, I was appointed to teach English Extension 1 at FSC and the results for the first cohort were impressive - all students scored above 75%. The results for students in Advanced and Standard English are also sound.Serving as a Year Adviser demands highly effective communication skills including patience, compassion, a sense of perspective and a sense of humour - often at the same time. I have also had the opportunity to mentor a number of early career teachers and this has been beneficial for all involved.
