You might look at my past experience and think, 'how does that fit with scientific journal publishing?' It doesn't, really, except for the publishing side of things. I ended up working in science by chance but it has completely changed my world. It was the spark I was missing in an otherwise happy career; I'd found the publishing avenue that would allow me to contribute to society in a way that felt meaningful for me.To summarise myself and my work in a handful of points:1) I'm a consistency nerd. I worship writing conventions and rules and strongly believe that consistency in grammar, punctuation and style can boost any piece of writing, whether it's an email to your work nemesis or a groundbreaking research paper. It doesn't matter how dry the subject matter is, the satisfaction I get from polishing something to within an inch of its life is second to none.2) Writing conventions and consistency are not the focus of my role as a Portfolio Manager, but I do think consistency and clarity helps with relationship management too. A clear and consistent manner will aid others in understanding the sort of person you are and what they can expect from you. The societies and editors I work with know that I listen to them, that I'm honest and professional in my approach, and that I value the reputation and quality of their journals as much as they do.3) My strengths are both old (what I knew I was already good at) and new (discovering I had a knack for something) and come in handy in most situations:– building rapport and solid relationships with authors, editors and societies;– copyediting, proofing and reference checking all types of documents and academic papers;– collaborating to build better workflows or improve existing ones;– finding efficiencies to shorten processes or make them more cost effective; and– creating style and technical documentation and guidelines.4) I've spent a lot of time pausing my work life to see the world. I've been challenged and rewarded in equal measure and these experiences and the people I've met along the way have taught me more than school and work put together. Much of who I am today stems from these learnings and directly influences both my work and personal life.
