In diverse work contexts, I have been shown to be an introvert wielding a force that draws people together. My housemate in a house with 20 other graduate and undergraduate students once said to me, “Before you came to live here, everyone kept to themselves. You’ve drawn us out and made us more of a community.”Though I work very well independently, people fascinate me and I’ve become a specialist in effective communication. When I worked as a nurse assistant, I thought about patients not in terms of their blood pressure readings, but in terms of their work and family life that had come to a grinding halt when they ended up in the hospital. As a personal care attendant, I learned that a person who is nonverbal and can’t sign would still “talk” increasingly if I learned how to listen and respond. While working overseas, I found that language learning was important for communicating with friends in a new culture, but so was renting a 16-seater van with a group of ladies for a shopping trip, accidentally backing it into a cavernous ditch in the 4:30 a.m. blackness and hauling it out together using our bare hands. Writing has been a passion of mine since I was a child, teaching and presenting come to me naturally, and I’m developing a fondness for academic research. In every endeavor, I’m driven to see my audience so engaged in the material that they leave with a vivid image in mind. I revel in the details. When my team devised an analogy to use in a PowerPoint presentation but couldn’t find free clip art for the illustrations, I taught myself to use a graphic design program and made the images myself (painstakingly; I am not a natural artist). I am a communications geek wielding a community-building interpersonal force (which, by the way, has the same effect in workplaces as it has in houses for college students) and am looking to transition from my overseas job to a new opportunity in Vermont.
