Caller issues include crisis, suicide prevention, grief, child and elder abuse, domestic violence, loneliness and isolation, substance abuse, suicide ideation and referrals to essential and basic resources such as food, shelter (homeless), housing, financial relief, tax credits, COVID-19, mental and physical health, jobs, legal and more. In the first few minutes of a call, create a caring bond and rapport; listen and ask questions to assess underlying needs; be mindful and empathetic of the caller’s mental health, wellbeing, age, background and safety; assess the level of urgency; acknowledge the caller with respect; de-escalate the situation; empower to create a safe place; provide referrals to essential services from appropriate providers from over 1300 local and nationwide organizations, as requested; encourage callers to plan and take positive action; end with the mood improved and comfort that support is available on the 211, 24 x 7.Equipped to handle the social emotional needs; continuously trained and supported by Center staff; easy access 1300 resources; 17-year professional experience as a senior insurance and financial specialist working with individuals and providers; taken 30+ hours of CNA (Certified Nurse Assistant) training, established Volunteer Surge to equip volunteers to serve; led and participated in humanitarian projects locally and worldwide; and connected other public and private organizations to build partnerships and collaboration.
