Completed a year long sabbatical and travelling throughout Europe, Asia, and New Zealand. I set out to expand my horizons, inspirations, networks, idea generation and skills that can be applied to my work. Professionally I have - • Visited more than 100 UNESCO World Heritage Sites with an eye to how they are interpreted, and their opportunities and challenges• Visited more than 100 other museums, designated scenic or tourist highways, nature parks, interpretive and nature centers, public art sites and tourism attractions seeking to understand their audience, role in the community, interpretation and to learn more about their key resources• Stayed in more than 200 different hotels, B&B’s and apartments in different locations to gather insights on sustainability in tourism, product knowledge, cultural differences, customer service and communications• Gathered information and ideas that can be used to inform projects in interpretive and sustainability training, planning and design, program and product development, and sustainable tourism business development

Parks And Destinations

Oversaw and developed interpretive and creative opportunities at the Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California. Projects included planning and implementation of signage and wayfinding package for the 104 acre property, development of in-room collateral, and thematic planning and design of history and sustainability messaging for food and beverage and retail operations. Participated regularly in an Aramark Parks and Destinations business development team working on contract retention and new business in National Parks concessions and cultural attractions throughout the US. Developed and managed sustainability programs including annual audits and training for certification of an ISO 14001:2004 environmental management system.

Denali National Park, Alaska

Directed interpretive program and training of approximately 65 tour driver/naturalists, and a department of cultural and living history interpreters, and interpretive coaches. Planned, developed and implemented multiple interpretive products. This includes "Windows into Wilderness", a documentary embedded with daily wildlife footage from a visitors tour as a memento of their experience, informational tour booklets provided to tour passengers within the park, and numerous exhibits and signs. Participated in business development team assessing interpretive potential and developing programs for both retention and new business opportunities at sites across the US. Oversaw tour and shuttle operations in addition to interpretation in Denali National Park for several years prior to becoming a dedicated full time director for interpretation.

Walking Softly Adventures (now Mountain Hiking Holidays) is a sustainable tourism operator that provides walking tours utilizing local guides and services on all of its offerings. I oversaw tour operations logistics for several walking tours in Europe, fully developed and set up a hiking tour in New Zealand, created and developed a mailing database for current and future clients, and co-guided a walking tour package in the French Pyrenees.
