As research fellow, my main focus is on issues of mobility. For example, how students learn can affect their educational mobility, hence my interest in identifying threshold concepts in design to enable a lens to be applied to those transformational moments that transform a student into a designer. Similarly, I am currently researching the impact that unwanted sexual incidents can have on students' educational mobility as such incidents, which are mainly, but not always, experienced by women, can result in poor educational outcomes or the abandonment of higher education. To date, with OfS Funding, I have implemented one of the first online reporting systems for students who have experienced unwanted sexual incidents, and developed the free online bystander training, which can be found here https://marshallelearning.com/e-learning-courses/bystander-intervention/. I also developed (in partnership with Rape Crisis, England and Wales) the Student unwanted sexual incidents course which can be found here https://marshallelearning.com/e-learning-courses/unwanted-sexual-incidents/.Research InterestsEquality issues in higher education; Identifying threshold concepts in design, violence against womenVision StatementMy vision is that barriers to mobility, particularly in relation to the thriving of women and girls, are addressed and removed via a robust, evidentiary research focus.
The Centre of Excellence for Product and Automotive Design (CEPAD) was established as part of the HEFCE-funded CETL initiative announced in 2005. My role involves shaping the research strategy to meet the three research aims of CEPAD: development of students' spatial awareness skills, identification of threshold concepts in design and internationalisation of the curriculum. This includes carrying out primary and secondary qualitative research with staff and a cohort of transport and product design students from entry (2005) to graduation (2009). From this I analyse the data, publish research papers and present at conferences and complied reports. In particular, I have achieved the following in relation to the internationalisation of the curriculum strand:- Developed and taught the `Learning through Cultural Exchange' Addvantage module, aimed at both international exchange students/Coventry University design students on exchange.- Participated in an HEA-sponsored study on the international student experience: an published the results in The Student Voice. - Gathered and analysed qualitative data on a two- year cross-collaboration design project between Coventry University and EAFIT University, Colombia.
