About Jane Shaw Stroup
I started my professional career as a journalist at the Jamaica Plain Citizen in Boston, Massachusetts; after a few twists and turns I became an associate economics editor at Business Week (in New York), then moved to Montana, where I spent 22 years with the Property and Environment Research Center (PERC), writing and editing articles about free-market approaches to the environment. In 2006 I joined the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal (then the John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy) in Raleigh, North Carolina, first as executive vice president and then as president. I am now chairperson of the Martin Center's board of trustees. After retiring from the Martin Center, I began studying history and received my master's degree from North Carolina State University in 2020. I now write and edit articles that reflect free-market approaches to history, the environment, and education. I joined the Pope Center as executive vice president in 2006 and in 2008 became its president. The center is now the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal. It seeks to improve higher education both nationally and in North Carolina. I was a writer, editor, manager, strategist, communicator, and fund-raiser.
