I am passionate about teaching English to English language learners at all levels. I have not yet found one text to fit all needs, so have written my own curricula for different levels and linguistic needs. I tailor my lessons to the student's English needs-NOT a book. I have always been interested in the convergence between teaching English and teaching reading to English Learners. For years, I have been trying to configure the roles of the reading teacher and the ESL teacher in public schools. What should be the policy for ELs who arrive after 3rd grade, when the phonics units are over? Which area is responsible for teaching what skills?Presentations and workshops about the teaching of ESL have also been a strong interest. After presenting over 30 workshops in my career, I recently had the honor of teaching 16 Chinese students who were preparing to become English teachers in China. Each time, it seems, I learn as much from the participants as they do from my presentation. Helping advanced English learners on extensive writing projects has also been an interest. I enjoy helping them to articulately state exactly what they want to say. Online teaching is also enjoyable to me, although, I still believe that face-to-face is more beneficial to the student. Although I have retired from public school ESL, I still love to teach ESL and am so thankful that God has allowed me the health and energy to continue.
