I'm currently employed at the best little CPA firm around. I get to chat with our clients, laugh with our staff, and polish up tax returns before I deliver them to clients. It's a big change in many ways from my career in the arts, but the things that feel the same to me are just enjoying my time with the people around me, and lending a hand where I can. I like feeling useful! Musicians do a lot of side jobs while pursuing their musical careers. I’ve been a music librarian, an editor, a receptionist at the Department of Justice in Salem, a nanny, a waitress, an administrative assistant in multiple offices, and answered phones at the IT help desk at a major insurance company where I learned that the first question you ask is “Did you turn it on?” In addition to twenty-odd years as a performer and voice teacher, I have worked in various capacities as an administrative employee. I’ve enjoyed working with a 40-line phone system. I have moved/re-organized more than one office. I’ve written the job manual for more than one job. I’ve been on the front desk greeting clients, I’ve filed, entered data, arranged travel, worked with company vice presidents and regional managers, prepared files and documents, and arranged catering and events. I’ve learned in-house company-idiosyncratic computer systems for more than one job. When I was in college I was a library assistant for four years. It’s all interesting, and it’s all good work.I’ve found that the things that make me a good teacher and a good musician also make me a good administrative employee - I know how things work. I’m great with details. I’m good with the public - I enjoy working with people. I have a high tolerance for sitting alone and getting the job done. I’m good with deadlines and organization. I do well with self-organization and direction, but I also take orders well. I learn new systems well, I memorize well, I analyze and extrapolate well. I’m a supportive colleague, always ready to lend a hand.
