Graduated from Univ of WI-Madison in Plant Pathology, 1988 with a PhD. Was the first married with children alum of this graduate program, with 5 peer reviewed publications from her research. First position was at Duke Univ, as Research Prof. with a joint appointment in the Dept of Radiology and the School of the Environment. Because a leading expert in use of high resolution magnetic resonance imaging for study of plant ecology, allowing non-destructive study of plant roots, water uptake from soil, and sugar/water transport in live tissue. Then went to Elon University to found the Environmental Studies Program, becoming the Dept. of Environmental Studies in 2008 - the first interdisciplinary Dept. at Elon. Founding Director of the Elon Univ Center for Environmental Studies, which lead creation of the Haw River Trail, a regional initiative linking recreation to conservation and is now a major environmental and economic asset to the region. Also is the Founding Director of Elon Sustainability Scholars for faculty development. Served as a Senior Ecologist with the Ecological Society of America, serving on and chairing the international Board of Professional Certification for professional Ecologists. Retired in 2023, now serving as on the Board of Directors for the Piedmont Conservation Council, the Haw River Assembly and the Cape Fear River Assembly.
