My purpose as a MLT was to collect and analyze a variety of biological and environmental samples within the STHA Laboratory in accordance with recognized international laboratory practices. My key contributions included:• As a microbiology technologist I have had exposure to a wide variety of culture and sensitivity procedures including, urine, stool, genital, wound, respiratory, sterile fluid, blood, and TB cultures. • As a fully “cross-trained” technologist in the core laboratory, I have executed and analyzed tests in areas including transfusion medicine/blood bank, urinalysis, serology, hematology, coagulation, chemistry and special chemistry.• I have assisted in creating employee shift schedules for the microbiology department.• I have helped update and maintain WHMIS safety data sheets.• In preparation for accreditation, I have helped create, write and modify several test procedures for microbiology.• I have performed phlebotomy on outpatients, inpatients, ER patients, with great accuracy. I’ve been repeatedly told that I am “really good at it”.• I have ensured test-result validity before recording/reporting results, earning a reputation for meticulous attention to detail. • I have evaluated quality control within the laboratory using standard laboratory test and measurement controls, and maintained compliance with WHMIS, OHS, safety and risk-management guidelines.
