Broadly, my focus was bringing information to health informaticists across the VA about the value they will bring to this new system.

I was a contractor for the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). I worked with four world-class researchers involved in the study of and vaccine development for endemic and epidemic zoonotic diseases such as Rift Valley Fever. My tasks included research, writing and editing drafts and shepherding documents through peer-reviewed publication via communication with reviewers, editors, and publishers, and coordinating those responses with the submitting authors.

I wrote editorial and promotional web content and ancillary pieces for physician practices and for biopharma newsletters including FDC Reports, Fierce BioPharma, FierceBiotech and FDANews while either freelancing full- or part-time. This experience was an outgrowth of my long-time work at a biopharmaceutical trade newsletter company, but expanded my knowledge to physicians and marketing pieces.

I evaluated articles submitted to the RAPS members-only online magazine concerning healthcare regulatory affairs and decided whether manuscripts were tenable and, if so, what were the deficiencies that needed rectifying. Often, this required substantive editing and line editing to improve readability. I worked with authors to incorporate changes in content, style and organization. I proofread drafts to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation and syntax and oversaw publication production, ensuring adherence to deadlines and budget requirements.

I researched and wrote daily articles for website and Intranet hospital publications, annual reports, nursing annual reports and collateral projects such as brochures. I was considered the go-to writer in a crunch by my boss and others. I edited and project managed the Nursing Division data-driven annual report. I used AP style while maintaining the editorial integrity and tone of hospital communications. I also wrote talking points for the president/CEO and created scripts for in-house videos, which I helped produce.

My work consisted of updating UT Southwestern's website on a daily basis with news releases, health tips and other public content. I additionally wrote research-based articles based on interviews with physician-scientist members of the faculty for dissemination to the press. I wrote feature articles on faculty or student leader profiles in addition.

I led the coverage of scientific, regulatory, legal, financial and marketing news for a company specializing in trade newsletters for a knowledgeable audience worldwide. The agencies covered included the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The flagship paper, "The Pink Sheet," has been published since 1939. During my tenure at FDC Reports, I worked collaboratively as executive editor with a staff of up to 12 reporters and editors on "The Pink Sheet" and was executive editor for three other newsletters that covered OTC drugs and dietary supplements; frontline pharmacy; and biomedical research policy. As a supervisor, one of my favorite aspects of the job was to mentor junior reporters to improve their subject comprehension and journalistic writing styles.
