I have spent most of my life working on international development, primarily in the range of activities lumped as "social sector". My major role was capacity development. It happened as a project officer, program developer, evaluator, innovator and sometimes in the trenches where things actually get done. This is what I like the best. One of the great insights I have had comes from a TED talk by Hans Rosling. He has looked at long term statistics of global change and shows that before there can be economic progress, there must be social progress. Aha!! I was on the leading edge, as I always suspected! In retirement from the stage of life called "work for pay" I first focused on community capacity building, with a special interest in youth. Gradually this has evolved to having a broader interest, in the process of ageing for example. My drive has also shifted down (or up) from being a servant leader to being a leading servant. Others can take the challenge and stress of leadership, while I want to be the most reliable follower ever! Getting certified as an ESL teacher, November 2013, helps me in that goal.I am spending more time in the highlands of central Mexico, a place called San Miguel de Allende. Life is good.

English TeacherFeed The Hungry, San Miguel De Allende Jan 2014 - PresentLos Ricos De Abajo, In The Campo Near San Miguel De AllendeThere's nothing finer than piling out of the four wheel drive, with like minded teachers, dusty from the run through the scrub and over the dry river and up the steep hill...to spend the day with campo kids who really want to learn how to be in a world that seems to run too often in English.

Esl Teaching StudentSit Tesol Aug 2013 - Nov 2013Guatemala CityHow could I remake myself after the end of the decade long caregiving journey? A new journey of course! This one took me into the heart of a city in siege where I lived alone behind a series of locked doors behind double barred windows...cautioned NEVER to venture out alone. I did of course. I had to buy food. And that's how I left the streets paralyzed in fear by grinding poverty to the finest shopping mall in the world. Heavily guarded to keep the rabble out. But I was white, with a purse...Welcome!! It was the starkest contrast I had encountered since the edgiest of my foreign aid shilling days. I learned again about the price in society of inequality. And with much challenge I also learned to be a teacher.

ActivistThe Hand Jan 2009 - Jun 2011Parksville Qualicum Beach AreaWhat a trip! How could I make a difference in the lives and prospects of teenagers trying to grow up as the invisibles in the oldest age postal code in Canada? Simple! Just be there as the adult ally of young and fiery folks with their own ideas. Some which flopped but we're learning, like early efforts for youth led recycling. Some which were just fun like the festivals and even a circus. And some that moved the dial of the way the community planned its future. The youth weren't youth any more and moved on and so did I, much richer from my time being a guide, den mother, driver, learner...

ActivistThe Citizens Forum Jan 2009 - Jan 2011Parksville Qualicum BeachFor a period spanning two years, a group of like minded citizens in the Oceanside area gathered together in a series of conversations asking "what was really essential in supporting community capacity?" and eventually concluded it was the ability to gather and talk about issues without arguing about them, and that the community would not progress without better collaboration skills. This work generated four Forums held over a period of a year. At the end of the Forums, the organizers stepped back to see what might happen as a result. The learning? That there needs to be a continued spark, aka "champion" of such ephemera as collaborative behavior.

Graduate With A Masters Degree In Public AdministrationSchool Of Public Administration 2001 - 2004Victoria British ColumbiaWhat possessed me to leave a career that was dying though it still had vital signs and be a student again? I was bored. I was curious to find new ways of thinking about my world. I wanted a change. I wanted to follow my family who had all pulled up stakes from Ottawa. My learning journey had two areas of focu. Indigenous Relations from a perspective of the public sector engagement with aboriginal realities. Secondly, I developed expertise in Community Based Research. My graduate project developed a plan for the Center for Excellence in Community Engagement. This was one of the building blocks to the creation of the Office of Community Based Research at the University of Victoria.
