I love and enjoy language in all its uniqueness and multifariousness: standard, dialect, idiolect; semantics & the granularity thereof; translation and semantic mapping; pragmatics; grammar, both descriptive and prescriptive; synonymy (in which I don't believe) and antonymy (likewise) - yet both still make a fascinating area of study.I'm a highly experienced corpus lexicographer, working in bilingual, learners, and monolingual dictionaries for over 30 years, and skilled in lexicography, translation, editing, and copy-editing. I've worked with corpus since very early days, when 10m tokens was state of the art, and have delighted in all the very many and major developments since then.I have played a key rôle in the creation and overseeing of several large projects, from the major Fifth Edition revision of the Collins-Robert French Dictionary, with partners Le Robert, to the creation of the English Source Language for Benedict: the New Intelligent Dictionary, a new target-language-neutral English dictionary database, in collaboration with European partners including Tampere University, Finland, and Lancaster University, UK. I was instrumental in creating the frameworks for these projects and others, for example English source language for Korean and for Chinese, as well as being responsible for the lexicographical strategy. I identified, assessed, and advised on the best way to integrate resources from databases across the department, and from corpus, in order to create the best possible frameworks, and ensure maximum reusability. I produced training documentation, ran training sessions, and provided feedback to colleagues both in-house and freelance.More recently I spent more than 5 years working on the OED (Oxford English Dictionary), researching words, senses, and their origins, their historical development and usage, as well as contributing to other OUP projects such as research into linking senses and translations from bilingual to multilingual datasets.
