Biography:Janeth Vazquez helped launch the first local Spanish-Language newscast in Kansas. She worked for Univision Kansas as a multimedia journalist. Ever since Vazquez was a little girl, she watched the news in Spanish with her parents and knew one day she would be the voice of her community. Vazquez also reported for Univision’s partner station, KWCH Eyewitness News. She said her favorite part of working in the newsroom is the breaking news. “It’s the adrenaline rush you get. There’s so much information going on, and at the end of the day, you’re exhausted, but you’re happy that you did a good job informing your community.”Vazquez was born in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Her parents immigrated to the United States when she was two years old. Vazquez was raised in Liberal, Kansas. She is the oldest of four girls. Vazquez also has a beautiful 4-year-old boy named Isaiah. Education has always been very important to Vazquez. She graduated from Seward County Community College in 2008. She transferred to Wichita State University and received her Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Spanish.Currently, Vazquez works as the marketing director for Southwest Medical Center. Previously, she worked as an Academic Advisor at Seward County Community College. She believes in inspiring and motivating the next generation and telling them “they can change the world.”Vazquez is very involved in her community. She teaches citizenship classes because she wants to empower the Latino community and teach them the importance of voting. Annually, she travels to Washington D.C. to advocate for immigrants’ rights. She meets with congressional representatives to encourage them to find a solution to the nation’s broken immigration system. Vazquez also organizes DACA clinics, workshops and educational forums aimed at informing immigrants of their rights. Vazquez organizes cultural diverse events in her hometown. She serves as president for the Cinco de Mayo Committee. Her favorite part of the celebration is putting together the Cinco de Mayo Pageant. Vazquez is a board member at the Baker Arts Center. Annually, she coordinates a fashion show to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month.
