Janet Rickershauser counsels nonprofit organizations on a broad array of governance and tax issues. Janet has particular expertise in the complex tax rules governing nonprofit organizations, including qualifying as a publicly-supported charity, intermediate sanctions, international grantmaking, the unrelated business income tax (UBIT), and lobbying restrictions, and she works with private foundations on program-related investments (PRIs) and avoiding self-dealing penalty taxes. In addition, she guides clients through special projects such as creating a joint venture, commercial co-venture fundraising program, or scholarship or disaster relief program.Janet also supports educational and other nonprofit organizations in managing endowments, administering restricted gifts, establishing and terminating charitable gift annuities, and other planned giving issues. In addition, she works with clients on organizational issues such as governance reviews, acquisitions, mergers, and dissolutions. She also provides litigation research and support in cases involving charitable bequests, restricted gifts, and trust administration.As an experienced estate and tax planning attorney, Janet also counsels individuals and families on charitable giving strategies, such as creating and administering family foundations, establishing charitable remainder trusts, and making endowment gifts.Janet holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law, an M.A. from Columbia University, and a B.A. from Brown University. She speaks French and some Spanish and Russian. Janet has served on the boards of the Atrium School and Project Citizenship. She is admitted to practice law in Massachusetts, New York, and Connecticut and is a member of Exempt Organizations Committee of the American Bar Association and the Tax-Exempt Organizations Steering Committee of the Boston Bar Association.
