Project Manager and Senior Researcher, my role at MMC involved the organisation, administration as well as content production on a number of large projects. Clients included tertiary institutions, allied research organisations, and donor-funded NGOs. Research outputs in which I was integrally involved included an investigation into the use of digital technology and four reports generated on the topic for the client, content writing for an annual research report, and data collection and insight generation into alumni of a prestigious national scholarship.

Research, research and research..that's what they said my focus should be during this valuable time. And so it has been. I haven't been a one-trick donkey though, I've gained valuable experience in supervision, grant writing, presentations, teaching at postgraduate level, administration, and assisted with departmental duties such as managing the website and chairing the ethics committee.The old cliched adage is true: it isn't work if you love it!

My PhD research project was funded by the Medical Research Council of SA (MRC) (awarded to Dr Candice Christie - 2011-2013), and I received a DAAD In-country PhD Scholarship (2010-2012). Without the generous funding none of the research would have been feasible. The exercise intervention officially began in June 2011 following an exhaustive ethical clearance procedure. Designed as a crossover trial, the participants fulfilled the function of being the control sample and once data was obtained for this subset they went on to exercise for 12 weeks. Managing this aspect of the project was fulfilling, and made more so with the involvement of the participants, as well as the research assistants (MSc students from our department). Analysis of applicable literature in formulating the evidence for this investigation was an exciting process (in that its a bit like "detective work"!). The opportunities I've been afforded along the way - ad hoc lecturing, supervision of other students, conference attendance and presentations to peer groups have contributed to this being a true journey of discovery every step of the way. The further along this path I travel, the clearer I am that I know nothing: and that this is but the very beginning.
