After graduating from Oxford University, I started my career as a librarian in the firm belief that given the right environment ...books, books, books.... I might one day become poet laureate and follow in the blazing footsteps of former Hull neighbour Philip Larkin. My career to date has not quite taken such an elegiac turn but my love of stories and words has been realised in the brilliant magazine and content work we produce at River.After working in science and financial publishing, curiosity compelled me to accept a job in the then infant world of customer magazines. In 1994, I started River with business partner Nicola Murphy, now River’s Chief Executive. With the innocence and arrogance of youth, we decided we could do much better than everyone else. The company grew rapidly and is now one of the leading top ten Content Agencies recognised for its magazine and digital content.River has launched and published some of the UK’s leading magazines from The Asda magazine, The BMW magazine and The Sunday Times Travel magazine to its current publications for world famous brands – Honda, WeightWatchers, Black Rock - and UK brands Superdrug, The Perfume Shop, The Co-operative Food and others.River is committed to content that is so good consumers pay for it – witness WeightWatchers magazine and Healthy, Healthy for Men and Pro Hair. I specialise in creating and delivering a strategic editorial vision and recruiting and leading creative teams.I'm author of two novels, "Best Friends" and "Coming To Terms", written with Oxford best friend Imogen Parker, a best selling author and writer.
