When my grandfather asked me what I would like to be when I grown up, I answered “an Animal Psychologist” the whole family except my Mom crack out laughing. After I high school I fell in love with someone on the coast, which dissuaded my plans of taking a gap year in Europe so, I ended up doing a animal behavioral course in Houtbay to be closer to the love of my life at the stage. My peers were all either oversees or studying business management, or something alike that would certainly pave a road of financial freedom and success. Somehow in the midst of young adulthood searching for a purpose I knew that I was different. A sense of creativity and the need to tell stories combined with a passion for nature conservation largely pushed me into the plummeting winter temperatures of the Karoo (Northern Cape) where I took a job as a game-capturing foreman. It was here where I met a journalist and photographer duo, it was also here where my faith steered me into the a largely similar direction, similar but with a different contentment type. Many years flew past during which I studied BA Audiovisual Production Management at the University of Johannesburg – I worked for a local breakfast show, an award winning wildlife/reality series for Discovery and assisting, shooting for current affairs programs (Carte Blanche, ENCA – Check Point and EWN). There was one moment when everything changed and I knew exactly what my purpose is. I was filming children from informal settlements around Johannesburg standing in a line to receive their simple lunch at a NGO’s educational program’s year end function. The expressions of hopeless anticipation, eagerness, wanting and the knowing that it will be another year until they will receive such a simple chicken-mayo roll, tapped Oros, a donut and a slice of watermelon shook me to my core and I knew that I have to use my skills as a story teller, a creative and a photographer to enable people who do not have a voice to speak through my lens and filmic productions.
