About Jan Harm Urbanus

Passionate about people & sustainability. Strategic & conceptual innovator. Team player with leadership mentality. Life-long learner.I am by training a process engineer for the food and chemical industry. I obtained a (cum laude) Masters degree in Food Process Engineering at WUR in 2005 and obtained a PhD in chemical engineering in 2011 at TU/Delft on the topic of product recovery by crystallization. From 2005 until early 2020, I have worked in the field of the BioBased Economy, at TNO. In various projects and research programs, we develop technologies that integrate feedstock pretreatment, (bio-)chemistry and product separation/purification into sustainable value chains that convert renewable feedstocks into biobased applications. From 2011-2020 I have been involved in the development of Biorizon, an initiative by TNO, VITO and the Green Chemistry Campus on 'aromatics from biomass'​. From 2018-2020, I have been responsible for Biorizon's activities on the technology that converts biomass (carbohydrates) into furans and those into aromatics. Since 2018 we make use of the demo-facilities at the Green Chemistry Campus, where we operate several pilot installations to learn about scale-up of our continuous Diels-Alder technology and to produce samples (1-10 kg) for application development by (industrial) partners. I believe in intrinsic motivation and love stimulating personal development. Furthermore, I draw energy from nature, from soccer & running and professionaly from impactfully contributing to a more sustainable world. Since 2020 I started as Deputy Research Manager in an exciting department dealing with "Climate, Air & Sustainability". Here I can further develop my people skills and continue working on sustainable solutions for society and industry. We work on assessing and evaluating emissions, pollution and impact of policy and developments for the circular economy (biobased, recycling, design, etc.).
