Janice Gobert holds a Ph.D. degree in Cognitive Science from the University of Toronto, an M.A. degree in Cognitive Science from McGill University, and a B.A. degree in Psychology from Laurentian University. She is a Professor of Learning Sciences and Educational Psychology in the Graduate Department of Education at Rutgers University. Prior to joining Rutgers, she was the Co-Director of the Learning Sciences and Technologies graduate program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (2005-2015), and a Senior Research Scientist at the Concord Consortium (1999-2005). Prior to that, she was a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Learning and Teaching at Harvard University, Assistant Professor in the Department of Science Studies at Western Michigan University, and a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Scientific Research Reasoning Institute at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Janice is also the CEO of a start-up company, whose products are Inq-ITS (Inquiry Intelligent tutoring System) for students, and Inq-Blotter, an alerting platform for teachers to accompany Inq-ITS (www.apprendis.com). As students engage in virtual inquiry with Inq-ITS simulations, they are assessed and scaffolded in real time on all science practices, including their writing about science. Teachers get real time reports and actionable alerts on their students’ difficulties on the science practices, allowing them to change whole class instruction on the fly, do differentiated instruction, or support students 1:1. All assessment, scaffolding, and alerting are done on the basis of AI-based algorithms. In addition to these 3 patents, Gobert holds patents in the area of eye tracking.
