About Janice Young

I've always sought to challenge myself, like when I stepped far out of my comfort zone working in HR and embarked on a 3 month volunteer placement to address youth unemployment in Ghana. This adventure led to invaluable experiences in international development and the non-profit sector. Despite developing a love for this path, I unexpectedly found my way back to my roots: natural and holistic healing, from closely observing my parents run Purity Life throughout my childhood (Canada's leading natural health product distributor). So I've taken on my next challenge and returned to school at the Institute of Holistic Nutrition. Alongside my studies I'm managing real estate investments in Ottawa, all the while raising my toddler and preparing for baby 2.

    I transitioned into this role in preparation for the EQWIP HUBs closure. I thrived under the pressure of handling multiple urgent priorities serving as both the HR focal point for over 60 international staff and the lead for closing the head office. Office Closure:I managed all the logistics and activities, while ensuring a working office for staff throughout the process. I developed and executed a comprehensive closure plan, effectively coordinated with staff, stakeholders, and was on top of all possible variables. I also coordinated the removal and storage of 5 years worth of confidential physical documentation. Before December 31st, I successfully emptied and closed the office without requiring any external services such as a junk removal company. HR:In preparation for the end of both CWY's and YCI's staff's contracts, I maintained detailed and accurate records of laws, policies and regulations across our 6 operating countries, and fulfilled all corresponding legal requirements (staff letters, agreements, etc.). To cover gaps in country capacity I supported the deployment of short-term consultants, as well as maintained regular HR administration and systems (time sheets, vacation requests, etc.). I also monitored status reports from all 12 international hubs and flagged any concerns relating to the project closure, and provided regular HR updates to senior management.

    I co-led volunteer recruitment and managed the Ghana, Indonesia, and Tanzania pre-departure process, ensuring a positive and smooth experience from the initial pre-screen to the final "bon voyage" call.Recruitment:I fulfilled needs across 12 learning centres and 18 local partners in 6 developing countries, recruiting professionals and students in a variety of focuses such as entrepreneurship, gender equality, and environmental sustainability. I managed a constant intake of applicants, leading Skype interviews, assessments, placement selections, and offers. During my time in this role I helped recruit nearly 300 volunteers, over 50% of the total number of volunteers.Pre-Departure:I deployed over 120 volunteers abroad, preparing all Indonesia, Ghana and Tanzania volunteers and coordinating their extensive pre-departure requirements. With monthly departures and placements unique to each volunteer, I was guiding 30+ volunteers simultaneously through a personalized pre-departure process of orientation, document collection, and fundraising. I maintained volunteer folders and the tracking tools and systems in support of the volunteer life cycle, ensuring accuracy and completeness. I also arranged travel and visa logistics, and coordinated with country staff to ensure smooth transitions to volunteer placements.
