Communication, connection and collaboration combined with a strong sense of social justice underpin everything I do publicly, including founding TEDx Dun Laoghaire and privately as a Specialist Speaker, Life Coach and Celebrant. Why also a celebrant? Because how we talk about death and dying matters. Not only does a funeral begin the healing process, but there are also times when people living with an incurable or terminal condition, decide to marry. So no surprises really that founding advocacy group End of Life Ireland, a volunteer led organisation dedicated to supporting end-of-life legislation in Ireland, was sparked into being when I heard Gaynor French in 2017, terminally ill herself, telling her story as to why she wanted to see a change in legislation to allow for Assisted Dying. Like us, this would be under strictly controlled circumstances. This, together with witnessing the direct impact of chronic pain, incurable neurological and terminal illness on people and their families in my role as an inclusive celebrant, has highlighted the changing attitude towards assisted dying and made me realise legislation is badly needed. My motivation springs from a deep belief in the inherent right of every individual to determine their own destiny, even in the most challenging circumstances. Through our organisation, we tirelessly advocate for the introduction of legislation to allow individuals of sound mind, to make decisions about their own medical treatment, including the option of medically assisted dying. We have become a powerful force, amplifying the voices of those who yearn for compassionate choices in their final moments, advocating for change and giving a voice to those who have long been silenced. As part of a global community, we have access to international experts and are able to connect our legislators, so Ireland can develop legislation we can be proud of.My hope is that through our collective efforts, Ireland will embrace progressive end-of-life legislation, providing individuals with the autonomy and compassion they deserve during their most vulnerable moments. Together, we can create a society that values choice, dignity, and the inherent worth of every human life.Find out more about the proposed legislation and get involved at www.endoflifeireland.ie If you are a healthcare professional, there is a group of Irish Doctors Supporting MAiD (medical asssistance in dying) you may like to connect with. www.maid.ie#NotInPainNotInSecret #NotInPain #Not in Secret#VoluntaryAsssistedDying #VAD Contact: Janie Lazar 086 8572005
