Finalist In Global Biomimicry Design Challenge
I participated for over 12 months in a global challenge and Start-up incubator facilitated by the Biomimicry Institute and the Ray of Hope Foundation. With more than 100 participants from all over the globe, our Start-up was one of the finalists of the programme. The duration of the programme was <12 months. We completed this programme parallel to our Master's studies.Topic: Climate change has resulted in more unpredictable night frosts in Kenya, which damages tea plantations and leads to economic losses and unstable incomes for farmers. Inspired by the giant groundsel (Dendrosenecio kilimanjari) and giant lobelia (Lobelia deckenii) plants, both native to Kenya, our team developed the Start-up HABARI. Our invention consists of an automatic -temperature sensing,- self deploying mesh which covers plants and protects them from frost. HABARI, increases farmers’ resilience to weather conditions and connects the farms with the local community by using local and sustainable products.
