Through the combined efforts of our program areas, HOPE works to advance racial, economic, and health equity in Oakland’s food system and built environment through policy change, planning, and programs that increase residents’ access to healthy food and spaces. Currently, the Environmental Justice work is focused on air quality in East Oakland as it relates to AB 617.

The Climate Center seeks solutions commensurate with the magnitude of the problem. As important as it is for individuals to take action, we especially need solutions at the policy level that can address the problem at the speed and scale required by science.- Does research regarding new climate and energy policies- Curates and edits the Climate Center and Clean Power Exchange communications- Helps execute and facilitate webinars with various topics such as Community Choice Energy policy, carbon sequestration, energy resilience, and climate justice- Makes public comments on behalf of The Climate Center

Naturalists for the preserves are trained in outdoor education to promote environmental awareness for elementary school students. Responsibilities include:•Knowledge on native plant species, animals, and insects from the Northern California region•Teaching school age children on the importance of environmental awareness •Leading tours of the preserve to children and adults

The Research Assistant works with the Energy Services Department to assistant in the accumulation of energy efficient data. Research Assistant duties included:- Tracking new developments in energy savings products, equipment and technologies - Assisted in the building and development of an energy efficiency regulatory library- Data gathering for analyzes of lighting, solar, water, weatherization or other projects and sales opportunities as determined by FCI ManagementThe RA interacts with various departments and may present analyses and research results to the sales and marketing teams

- Engaging and involving students in service learning throughout Sonoma County. - Planning with various organizations and coalitions within Sonoma State and Sonoma County to host volunteer events and projects- Recruiting student volunteers and organizing environmental restoration tasks to engage students on local environmental issues- Organizing the annual Earth Day and Sustainability Fair events on campus

Planned alternative spring break focused on food justice and healthy food access in low-to-moderate income communities of West Oakland and San Francisco.- Developed partnerships with community-based organizations to provide valuable experiences for student volunteers. - Managed logistics and scheduling for a week of activities. - Engaged in sustainable farming practices and systems with farming communities in Sonoma and Marin counties.
