Janine Harrison Email and Phone Number
I relocated with my family from South Africa to Adelaide, South Australia, in 2006. We have two adult daughters. I have worked at Flinders University for the past 18 years. I am a Senior Lecturer (Teaching Specialist) in Social Work in the College of Education, Psychology and Social Work. My career in social work started when I first qualified in South Africa in 1988. I was first employed as a social worker in paediatric oncology and haematology at a large academic hospital in Johannesburg. I then spent seven years working in the drug and alcohol field, ending up as Assistant Director of the South African National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependency. I developed a special interest in long-term individual and group therapeutic work with people who were struggling with addiction, mental health and trauma. I was part of a specialised long-term psychotherapy training group in South Africa for 17 years.I began a part-time academic career at “Wits” University, Johannesburg, in 1995 whilst studying for a Masters degree and working at a specialist unit for children and adults who had experienced sexual abuse. While working as an academic, I participated in the development of legislated national standards for social work education for the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). I co-developed a set of national standards of practice for Employee Assistance Practitioners, who are mainly drawn from the Social Work profession in the South African context. After 9 years in academia, I joined the South African campus of Monash University as Community Services Manager in 2004. In this role, I implemented a macro perspective with a dual focus on both the university community of staff and students and its engagement with surrounding impoverished communities, with the support of a dedicated team. My work has included social action, advocacy, community development, organisational development, policy analysis and development, group work and counselling. I was involved in the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. I have maintained a strong interest in anti-oppressive work throughout my career, and have been involved in social action and advocacy with marginalised people and communities. More recently, I have been doing work with refugees and have served on the Board of STTARS (Survivors of Torture and Trauma Assistance and Rehabilitation Service) in Adelaide, which works mainly with refugees.
