Profile bio

About Janine De Wit

Hi! I am an (ecohydrology) researcher at KWR Water Research Institute and provenda at the Wageningen University. My specific field of interest is groundwater, hydrology, drainage, irrigation, soil-water-plant interactions. I enjoy doing field work and collecting data and seeing how processes work in the field. However, I also enjoy using models to better understand hydrological and plant processes. Within my PhD, I have the opportunity to do fieldwork, collect data and use models. We focus in my PhD on how the measure controlled drainage with subirrigation can contribute to the larger water challenge of retaining, replenishing and discharging water in the Netherlands. My goal is to contribute a puzzle piece to the big water puzzle with my PhD research. In addition, I find it important that young people find their way in the water sector. That is why I am committed to the Early Career board at KWR. With the Early Career Board, we organize activities for young people ranging from a water excursion, preparing for a conference, as well as just having drinks.Besides working, I enjoy running, cycling, spending time with friends and family, organizing events and being outdoors.

Balancing between water retention and water discharge in the Pleistocene uplands of the Netherlands using controlled drainage with subrrigation.> Development of subsurface drainage systems: Discharge – retention – recharge (peer reviewed)> Hydrological consequences of controlled drainage with subirrigation (peer reviewed)> Controlled drainage with subirrigation systems: Reduce water supply by automatic control (peer reviewed)> Data underlying the publication: Hydrological consequences of controlled drainage with subirrigation (dataset)> Moeten we ons watersysteem aanpassen? After World War II, the Dutch agricultural fields were drained to remove water to increase crop production, to guarantee food production. Additionally, the freshwater demand of different sectors (agriculture, industry, drinking water) increased, causing an increased pressure on the groundwater system. The combination of fast drainage and increased use of groundwater for human activities, led to declining groundwater tables in the Dutch Pleistocene uplands. Given the changing climate resulting in dry periods, solutions for water retention are needed to decrease the pressure on the groundwater system, and to guarantee the future water supply for different sectors. We focus in this PhD study on how the measure controlled drainage with subirrigation can contribute to the larger water challenge of retaining, replenishing and discharging water in the Netherlands.
