About Jan Kędzierski

I’ve spent years building and perfecting social robots, having been inspired by their potential to touch lives as I took part in various studies at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. I have both applied for and participated in various national and European research projects, which has given me the chance to collaborate with several different interdisciplinary and international consortia.I firmly believe that the right place for a social robot is at home, and after working with robots in laboratories for many years, me and my friend Michał Dziergwa came to the conclusion that our technology is ready to make that a reality! That decision led to our setting up a company EMYS Inc. (formely FLASH Robotics) in order to bring social robot EMYS to market. We were honored to be accepted into the HAX - the world’s #1 Hardware Startup accelerator in the heart of Shenzhen, China, often referred to as “the Silicon Valley of hardware”.In 2017 I was recognized as Innovator Under 35 Europe by MIT Technology Review. It is is an honour and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make our dream about robot EMYS real.https://youtu.be/m5odUuTG8vc

www.emys.cocontact@emys.coEMYS™ is a friendly robotic head that teaches kids ages 3-7 foreign languages through regular, fun interactions. EMYS appeals to multiple senses, and uses language children already know via their favorite cartoons, toys, and items from their surroundings. He can move, speak, recognize faces, and express emotions - which fosters bonding. Through the journey of learning languages, EMYS can become a part of children’s world, full of wonder, characters, imagination.Learning processes take time and it’s best for kids to start early, especially when it comes to language. It’s optimal for kids to start learning a second language while they’re still developing their first language. The trouble is, weekly private lessons are inefficient and expensive, and existing games and language apps don’t have the engagement factor that kids need. Ways of teaching kids must be attractive and engaging to children, as they need to learn with all of their senses. Specifically designed to address the unique learning preferences of early childhood, EMYS leverages the power of repetition, multiple senses, emotional expressiveness, and a sense of accomplishment. To further incentivize participation in lessons, kids earn daily rewards that unlock new games and content.

Over the last decade a significant increase in interest in social robots can be seen, both among scientists and potential customers. These constructions are developed nowadays not only to make life easier for their potential users, but also increasingly often to become human companions (T. Fong, C. L. Breazeal, C. Bartneck). Humanity is heading towards understanding and acceptance of technology. We want it to be intuitive and easy to use in a way that is natural to us. For this reason, we tend to anthropomorphize our computers, cars, and other gadgets (S. Mithen). On the other hand, a number of marketing studies show that people quickly become attached to everyday objects (D. W. Park). They also have a tendency to grow fond of objects of non-functional utility, only because of their aesthetic or sentimental value (D. W. Park at all). There are, therefore, good reasons why one should design and construct socially interactive devices and develop them so that they can be not only useful but also able to interact.

Living with Robots and Interactive Companions, LIREC was a research project exploring how we live with digital and interactive companions. Throughout the project we're exploring how to design digital and interactive companions who can develop and read emotions and act cross-platform. We're also bringing together the world of ethology, social science, design & computer science to design future real world applications today. The project has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under grant agreement n° 215554.
