I worked as a technical writer at Microsoft for many years, until I stepped down to make more time in my life for fostering sustainability in the Northwest.At Microsoft, I wrote online Help and Web-based guides for Windows Server products. From time to time, I acted as project lead for group writing projects in a large, highly skilled writing team. I mentored other writers, and gave presentations and led field trips centered around green IT. Microsoft is, of course, a very dynamic environment. The waves of information rolled in constantly, and I always found it a fascinating challeng to ride them.I might also mention that I received two Merit Awards in the Technical Publications Competition of the Society for Technical Communications (Puget Sound Chapter), 2003-2004.
As a member of a collaborative team, I helped organize and facilitate a series of sustainability-oriented Leadership Labs through Sustainable Seattle, spring 2009.
I changed things up a bit in my work life in the middle of the nineties, stepping away from technical writing to tutor high school students in math, science, study skills, and writing. It also gave me a real window into the many different ways that people learn. It was awe-inspiring sometimes, seeing those young people develop real confidence and skill!
During the first half of the 1990's, I had the chance to write about a software product called SNA Server, that allowed you to connect servers to mainframes. It was a great software team to write for. It was also great to read the reviews of my documention in the trade press: “clear, complete, and concise.”

I worked as a unit secretary in the Intensive Care Unit and in Orthopedics, getting the right information into the right person's hands at the right time. I also trained nurses in the use of the computer system and wrote a user's manual for it.
I created and maintained databases reflecting all Farm operations: animal nutrition studies, bovine genetics development, and dairy operations. I worked with Farm managers to create report formats, and organized and wrote final research reports.
I worked as a unit secretary in in a Medical-Surgical unit, and learned a lot from the amazing nurses and doctors-- and patients-- around me.
