At UFZ, I focused on designing and evaluating sustainable blue-green technologies to enhance decentralised stormwater and drought management in urban areas, addressing the increasing pressures on local water cycles in the built environment.𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬:• Designed and evaluated solutions for green roofs, infiltration tree trenches, and underground storage systems to improve urban climate and water resilience.• Key scientist in the Leipzig BlueGreen project, bringing sustainable solutions into practice within the Leipzig City Lab, under a federally funded initiative.• Led the Process Engineering working group within the UFZ Green Roof Research Network, fostering collaboration and innovation in green roof technologies.• Developed dynamic models for sustainable green roof water management.• Designed, built, and managed sensor networks and corresponding environmental data management systems to monitor and improve water management systems at the city level.• Pioneered in-situ GHG measurements from green roofs, contributing to the understanding of their environmental impact and benefits.• Certified drone pilot, using drones to capture thermal images to evaluate the benefits of different types of green roofs on the urban climate.• Engaged in outreach and training activities through the Leipzig Green Roof Academy, utilising problem-based learning approaches to teach students about resilient green roof design.

In the IRC-funded BIOMAT project, we were looking at pollutant attenuation processes in naturally forming biological zones in soils for on-site wastewater treatment. Using the results of full-scale field research sites to translate selected observations into focussed lab experiments, we were using in-situ, non-invasive sensor and imaging technologies to assess the attenuation of N compounds, nanoparticles, and pathogens in the soil. In the EPA-funded PERCTEST project, we were assessing and comparing the current falling-head percolation test methodology for site assessment for on-site wastewater treatment with other, more rigorous, methodologies. The results of this project will directly inform future revisions of the EPA Code of Practise and will serve as a reference for upcoming regulatory adjustments for planning on-site treatment systems in Ireland.

As WASH consultant for BORDA South Asia, based in Bangalore (India), I mainly led and coordinated the development of a full-semester vocational training course for ATVI Kabul (Afghanistan) on decentralized sanitation, including the delivery of Training of the Trainers. Further support was given to (i) the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded project on "Strengthening the operation & maintenance sector for servicing decentralised urban sanitation infrastructure in Karnataka, India" in regards to identifying potential pilots for understanding and developing faecal sludge management (FSM) systems in order to improve the performance and safety of on-site sanitation, and (ii) the ICCO funded project assessing GHG emissions and the vulnerability of decentralized sanitation infrastructure towards climate change.
