About Michael Lacea, Mba, Mph
Healthcare and service to others have always been a passion of mine instilled in me by my parents. My father became one of the first physical therapists from the small island of Bohol in the Philippines. My mother went to medical school at Cebu Doctors' University and became an OBGYN. I continued my parents’ legacy by enlisting in the United States Navy and becoming a Hospital Corpsman at the age of 19. I was first assigned to 3rd Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan. My most rewarding experience was when I was deployed supporting Operation Enduring Freedom Philippines. While there, myself and one other corpsman were the first response medical providers for a platoon of 30 Marines. I also helped develop positive relations with the host nation’s military by providing Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) training to Filipino military and civilian personnel. Our classes trained over 120 medical and non-medical personnel on the treatment of patients in a battlefield setting. Not only was this rewarding to me because I was able to contribute to my birth country, but I was humbled to know that our training resulted in saving countless lives in the fight against terrorism in the Southern Philippines. After Okinawa, I transferred to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego. I was assigned as the Medical Records/Readiness supervisor, enforcing HIPAA/Privacy Act compliance, implementing department standard operating procedures, and increasing military deployment readiness from 75% to 95%. I am currently pursuing my Masters of Business Administration, aspiring to be a healthcare administrator. My passion is helping veterans obtain access to healthcare, especially mental health services. I realized my passion after witnessing many of my veteran friends unable to obtain health services associated with their service connected disabilities. My personal vision is to see veterans receive the help they need and reduce veteran suicide to zero.
Listed skills include Medical Records, Electronic Medical Record, Administrative Assistance, Healthcare Management, and 11 others.
