A life-long San Diegan, Jan was educated at Point Loma High School and the University of Arizona, where she majored in journalism and radio/TV. Starting her career as a real estate journalist, she served as editor of BUILDER magazine for the San Diego Building Industry Association (BIA). Jumping from journalism into public relations, she joined a major local marketing firm where she learned the business and grew her media relations skills. In 1986, after taking a year to travel the world, she returned to San Diego to found Scribe Communications.Her community involvement includes past directorships at a number of non-profits, including the YWCA, Charter 100, the San Diego Press Club and La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary. A graduate of LEAD San Diego and winner of the San Diego Business Journal’s “Women Who Mean Business Award,” she supports several local women’s organizations including Women’s Empowerment and Voices of Women. In addition to serving on the marketing committee at La Jolla Country Day School, she is now providing media relations counsel for the I.D.E.A. District, an initiative by two local developers to transform downtown San Diego’s Upper East Village neighborhood into a sustainable, mixed-use “innovation, design, education and art” district. Her most rewarding pro-bono activity, which began in October 2001, is the ongoing promotion of the Rotary Jalalabad School in Afghanistan, which currently serves 3000 boys and 1500 girls.Specialties: Media relations, publicity, reputation management, crisis communications, community relations
