I am an entrepreneur with more than 20 years of leadership experience and over 5 years of experience as C-level executive and co-founder of a startup. I have always been excited about entrepreneurship and empowering teams – from training scout leaders and organizing events with hundreds of people 20 years ago to commercializing technology from MIT and building a world-class team at C2Sense. Boston’s startup ecosystem has seen a transformation in the last decade with more interest from potential founders and investors and the emergence of IoT- and data-startups. It is a privilege to be part of this development, as an advisor to founders, in the jury of startup competitions, as CEO/CTO of C2Sense - and when transferring lessons from the startup world to an established business at www.teeshop.de. Building a startup can be a rollercoaster requiring focus, determination, and thinking outside the box. My training including the PhD at MIT allowed me to build these skills, working on multi-disciplinary projects in chemistry/materials, engineering, and data science – resulting in 14 publications with 1,400+ citations and 8 patents/applications. No venture can be successful without a great team. A colleague once told me after a feedback meeting: “You just criticized [the team member], and he is leaving happier than he was before.” This is the leadership philosophy I believe in – Putting people first and unlocking our colleagues’ potential, performance, and happiness with insightful and empowering feedback and support. It has been very rewarding to implement this in many teams over the last 20 years.Supporting others and unlocking patterns in business and technical data is fun and challenging, but I also enjoy pushing my limits playing underwater rugby and volleyball, going on hiking trips, and solving complex puzzles. Do you also believe that more teams and technologies should reach their full potential? Feel free to reach out so we can achieve this together.

Head Of GrowthGewürz- Und Teehaus Schnorr & Co. GmbhCambridge, Ma, UsaIt is a privilege to be part of any business that has been successful for over 60 years - even more so if it is the family business that my grandparents started in 1956, Gewürz- und Teehaus Schnorr (www.teeshop.de). As Head of Growth, I am responsible for developing long-term strategies as well as short-term campaigns to improve revenue and profit. This involves a data-driven approach to understand customer behavior and interests, identifying revenue drivers based on historic and current data, leveraging the strong brand of the brick-and-mortar store in online retail, and transferring lean startup methodologies to the established family business.

Gewürz- und Teehaus Schnorr is a 3rd generation family business started by my grandparents in 1956 and now run by my brother, Dr. Kai Schnorr. Their physical store is known beyond their location, Frankfurt, Germany, to have highest quality teas, spices, cooking, and baking ingredients. The team regularly meets personally with high end tea growers in Asia, to expand their knowledge and to find new products for their customers. -
Startup Advisor And StrategistJmsCambridge, Ma, UsaBuilding successful startups is inherently challenging and I have been receiving a lot of support from investors, founders, academics, and other members of the startup ecosystem. I enjoy giving back to the community by helping founders, investors, people who are considering launching a startup, and others who are active in startup environments. My focus is on the combination of business strategy, technical roadmaps, and team culture with the goal to craft a strategy that delivers value for startup teams, investors, and other stakeholders alike. In this context, I have also provided evaluation of potential startup investments for Breakout Labs/Thiel Foundation and Propel(x).

C2Sense is an Internet of Things (IoT) and Data startup that provides valuable insights to customers based on next generation gas sensors that I co-developed in the Swager lab at MIT. Together with my fellow co-founders, Prof. Tim Swager and Eric Keller, I built the company from the early beginnings to launching the first products. C2Sense is being supported by top investors including MIT’s The Engine, Breakout Labs/Thiel Foundation, Cranberry Capital, Dream Incubator, Propel(x) Investors, Boston Millennia Partners, Castor Ventures, Newlin Investment Company and TLP. -
Mit 2012-06 - 2013-12Cambridge, MaMy research during the PhD and postdoc at MIT led to 10 publications with over 1,200 citations total as well as 6 patents/patent applications. However, my proudest achievement was that my research led to an award-winning startup, C2Sense.
Before founding the company and commercializing the cutting-edge technology, my team and I won the Products and Services Track of MIT’s $100k competition pitching C2Sense’s business plan.
My postdoc was largely funded by MIT’s Deshpande Center, a competitive program to promote founding of hard technology startups and technology commercialization. The postdoc was a combination of multi-disciplinary technology collaborations, business plan and strategy development, building C2Sense’s initial team, and pitching the company to investors. I trained a very skilled research technician who later became C2Sense’s first employee. My co-founder Prof. Tim Swager and I brought Eric Keller, the company’s first CEO, on board and together we successfully applied for an SBIR Phase I government grant to launch the company. -
European Career Fair @ Mit 2012-06 - 2013-01Cambridge, Ma, UsaThe 2013 career fair that I co-chaired and organized, attracted over 100 employers and 4,000 candidates. I recruited and led a team of 70 volunteers – attracting 2-3 times the typical team size. We oversaw and coordinated all team activities including IT infrastructure, logistics, operations, press/PR, finance, attracting exhibitors, and supporting employers’ preparation for and activities at the career fair. We successfully connected high potential candidates with great companies allowing all parties to reach their full potential together.

European Career Fair @ Mit 2011-08 - 2012-02Cambridge, Ma, UsaAt the European Career Fair 2012 I became team leader of two areas. My team and I supported the over 100 employers with scheduling candidate interviews during the fair weekend, both, during preparation in the months leading up to the fair and with logistics during the fair. Additionally, I led a team that was responsible for organizing accommodations for employers at the fair. With both teams, I worked with a variety of multi-national and European employers, including a number of Fortune Global 500 companies as well as smaller companies and universities. -
American Chemical Society 2008-06 - 2010-08Boston, Ma, UsaMy team of 9 volunteers and I organized a full-day symposium on “Chemistry and Policy” at the Fall 2010 ACS Meeting with top speakers including George Whitesides (highest H-Index rating of all living chemists in 2011) and former CIA director John Deutch. We raised a budget of $24,000 for the event.

Max Planck Institute For Polymer Research 2007-01 - 2007-07Mainz, GermanyIt was an honor to conduct my research as part of a large, multi-disciplinary, and international team, in Prof. Klaus Müllen’s group at Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, Germany. The research focused on obtaining new material properties by combining boron chemistry with organic/metallo-organic chemistry in oligomers and dendrimers and was published in Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008.

Bdp Scout Youth Organization 2003-03 - 2006-12GermanyAs leader of the scout organization’s program for 100 group leaders and 500 members in my home state Hessen, Germany, I was in charge of building/managing a team of 8-10 volunteers, training the group leaders, planning programs and initiatives, and organizing events for all members in the 7-11 year age-group of the state. Most team members spent over 300 hours per year on the projects and I learned a lot about motivating a group to perform great at this level of effort without being able to provide monetary compensation.
