About Machiel Jansen
I'm interested in new technologies, discover their potential, and try to separate the good from the bad and the ugly. In practice this means following what happens at clouds like AWS, GCP and others. In addition, the open source community has a lot to offer: from Apache Spark, Kubernetes, Apache Kafka etc.My interest in technology is no goal in itself. I like to think how it can be applied to innovate the services we provide and what impact it has in the organisation. I have a background in logic and a strong theoretical knowledge of computer science. However, I'm certainly not blind for practical issues and considerations. If something works in theory but not in practice, the theory is wrong, or at least insufficient.I am always eager to develop both my analytical and practical skills. I lack the patience to be a full time software developer but I value the occasional hands-on activities.I can be highly critical but my criticism is always based on arguments and reasoning. I have no problem with being proven wrong, on the contrary. Being right is not something I value socially. As a team leader I encourage initiative and responsibility. I strongly believe in developing strong capabilities rather than trying to improve weak points for the development of team members. I do not like micromanagement at all. Instead I prefer to focus on results and happily stay away from how these results are achieved. Learning new things is almost essential to me. I follow MOOCs on subjects that interest me, time permitting. I read quite a lot - including fiction - and my interests transcend the boundaries of my daily job.

Senior Consultant/ Group Leader Scalable Data Analytics
CurrentI head the Scalable Data Analytics group at SURFsara. The team consists of 5 people, including myself: 4 consultants (advisors) and 1 system programmers.Together we provide Spark and Jupyter as a service, based on Kubernetes. We help and advise the users of Dutch universities and research institutes on the use of software stacks like Apache Spark, Hadoop, ElasticSearch, Kafka etc. We also investigate and use commercial Cloud offerings, like AWS and GCE.We have developed our own courses and workshops on Big Data, Hadoop and Spark, which we (myself included) have presented often for audiences with an educational, research but also commercial background. Recently we have expanded our portfolio with workshops on Machine Learning for Spark, SQL and no-SQL. In addition, I am projectleader of a project that aims to build a searchable archive of Dutch Tweets on the basis of a serverless architecture on AWS.Finally, I lead a small project on Blockchain, and do some hands on work with smart contracts in Ethereum, using Solidity.

Big Data Training
CurrentMy colleagues and I have developed our own Big Data/Hadoop/Spark training over the years. I have presented this training at IIR, MiCompany, EMC, Achmea, Ministery of Defense and several Dutch universities. Currently the program focuses on Apache Spark with hands-on exercises in Jupyter Notebooks. We use the SURFsara K8 infrastructure to provide the computational training facilities.
