Bi+ Equal is a European Commission funded project, designed and run by Bi+ Nederland and Spectrum, working together towards a European bi+ umbrella organisation, for the community, by the community. My role is to lead the research team which mappes the existing bi+ initiatives, organisations and networks ​in Europe, conducts a needs assessment (online survey), and collects and ​shares good practices. Other objectives in the project are facilitating capacity building, mutual learning and exchange, by ​organizing online and in person opportunities as well as exploring and creating a European bi+ legal entity through a ​participative process.

As a researcher, I conducted several qualitative and quantitative studies and scans. I was principal investigator and led research teams in the Netherlands, Kenya and Indonesia. I also advised ministeries, programme developers and NGOs on policy or programme development, implementation and advocacy. Key projects & studies:- organizational baselines and scans on sexual and gender diversity in a youth organisation, in care homes, and for a gender transformative approach in iNGOs- writer of a sex and gender inclusion manual- coordinator of a state of the art on LGBTI inclusive health care in the Netherlands - project leader storytelling based on interviews with parents of a child with intersex/DSD - principle investigator of a mixed methods research within an international human rights programme focused on inclusive SRHR for youth in 11 African, Asian and Latin-American countries- principle investigator studies on sexual health of LGBT people - lead author of a knowledge file on inclusive SRHR and international and external mainstreaming - member of the coordinating team in the development of a Dutch standards of care on paraphilia

This network provides a platform for Flemish and Dutch LGBTI research. We distributed a news letter (until 2019) and organized research conferences in Antwerp, Belgium in 2016 and Amsterdam, Netherlands in 2018, and thematic meetings.

As a member of the research group Identities, Diversity and Inclusion, led by prof.dr. Halleh Ghorashi and supervised by prof.dr. Saskia Keuzenkamp and dr. Lorraine Nencel, I finished and successfully defended my dissertation Uncomfortable Encounters. My study focused on same-sex oriented young people, living in a tolerant, yet heteronormative society. I was interested in the meaning of gender. The study was based on in-depth interviews and a national survey study. The quantitative study also led to a policy focused research report by the Netherlands Institute for Social Research commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science / Department of Equality.Key topics are heteronormativity and intersecting normativities, the Dutch culture of tolerance, post-gay, gender nonconformity, labeling same-sex sexuality, experiences of bisexual young people, and the need for a comprehensive sexual and gender perspective. I led, conducted and authored qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods studies in the research teams equality and minorities, commissioned by several ministeries. I coordinated a multilingual interview team and co-developed methodological and ethical protocols for qualitative research.Topics: social situation of LGB people, persons with intersex/DSD, diversity and inclusion in the Dutch armed forces, marriage migration.
