About Jan Van Houdt

Jan Van Houdt received a doctoral degree in device physics from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1994. In 1995, he received the Scientific Award of the Royal Academy for Science, Literature and Fine Arts of Belgium for his research achievements in microelectronics.After his M.S. thesis, he joined imec in Belgium. In 1990, he invented the High Injection MOS (HIMOS™) cell, which lead to a novel cost-effective nonvolatile memory technology, which he transferred toward 4 industrial product lines. In 1999, he became Group Manager of the Nonvolatile Memory activities at IMEC. He has published 300 papers, wrote 2 book chapters and accumulated more than 250 conference contributions (including 40+ invitations and 5 best paper awards). He has filed more than 80 patents worldwide.He served on 10 conference committees. In 2007 he was the General Chairman of the International Conference on Memory Technology and Design (ICMTD). He was the Memory Technology chairman of the IEDM in 2011. In 2011 he was promoted Director of Flash memory at imec, responsible for the imec strategy and business in that area worldwide. In 2014 he became an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to Flash memory and a Chief Scientist at imec. In 2015 he was appointed part-time professor at the University of Leuven to teach IC technology in the master programs on electrical engineering and nanoscience & nanotechnology. From 2016 till 2018, he was Distinguished Member of Technical Staff (DMTS) responsible for exploratory memory at imec and in October 2018 he became Scientific Director in imec's Semiconductor Technology and Systems division, active both in the memory as well as in the logic scaling programs. In 2019 he became Program Director for ferroelectrics and in 2021 he was appointed as Professor at the Physics and Astronomy department of the KU Leuven. In 2022 he was promoted to imec Fellow.Specialties: Memory technology (business, systems, design, technology and physics perspective) and steep slope transistor technology. Teaching and thesis advising, Consultancy.
