About me:Hi! My name is Janvi Patel. I recently graduated from Masters of Environmental Science degree from University of Toronto. Something about me is that I love observing and monitoring the natural environment - in its simplest of forms, (for example the pattern of branching in leaves or the changes in cloud formation over time). My experience and skills:I studied environmental geoscience at University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) (for the love of rocks and weather). I also completed my Masters in Environmental Science at UTSC. Over the five years of my post-secondary education, I developed strong skill in working with environmental and geospatial data and its analysis using Python, Microsoft Excel, R, and ArcGIS Pro. I have also gained experience in scientific literature review by completing numerous topic-based research assignments and sharing results with figures, graphs, and tables, that is summarized in report or presentation (following science communication techniques tailored to the needs of audience).I also have diverse in-field experience that ranges from geological to ecological (gained from UTSC and working at Rouge Valley Conservation Centre): (1) From geology field trips, I have learned the importance of safety and planning beforehand, in addition to mapping and recording data through drawing, coloring, and describing the geologic structures/rock types. As well as keeping interpretation separate from observations! (2) From ecological field trips, I have learned to identify flora and fauna local to Southern Ontario and assisted in monitoring of species (moths, birds, amphibians, and reptiles). I have also gained hands-on experience monitoring freshwater systems following OSAP and OBBN protocols, and learned to sample and identify benthic macroinvertebrates. My present goal:(1) To strengthen my geospatial data analysis using Python and ArcGIS, and to learn about spatial distribution of natural features (mountains, lakes, sediment, etc.) (this topic is so fascinating to me!)(2) To strengthen my science communication skill to be engaging to different age groups and inclusive. Job hunting:I am presently finding jobs in the environmental/earth sciences whether it is research, data analysis, in-field environmental monitoring, or as an educator. Environmental Education AssistantRouge Valley Foundation And Rouge Valley Conservation Centre May 2021 - Present(1) Learned the following:- Species identification skill and their ecology for birds, plants, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish and insects found in Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP)- Learned to hike in all-weather conditions in all types of terrain.- Using I-naturalist and Merlin for identifying and recording species observation- Assisted in salamander, moths, birds, and benthic macroinvertebrate survey in field(2) ~ 3 years of experience delivering educational lessons on nature hikes, to summer camp kids, school, university, and community groups on environment and ecology of Rouge National Urban Park (RNUP) as per the curriculum. (3) ~ 3 years of experience of planning and creating educational resources and activities including presentations, information cards and educational games for summer camp and seasonal events, using Canva and Microsoft applications.(4) Worked in team environment(5) Assisted in training of newly appointed environmental education assistants as a responsible senior(6) Developed listening and communicating skills through interacting with kids from diverse backgrounds.(7) Assisted in removing dog strangling vines and planting of native pollinators plants in the pollinator gardens. (8) Assisted in various environmental outreach events (Astronomy night, firefly night, Haunted House, Owl Prowl, etc.) by setting up, cleaning and giving directions. -
