About Dr. Jan Willem Coenen

Leading the charge on materials and components development for nuclear fusion at the Institute of Fusion Energy and Nuclear Waste Management (IFN-1), I'm all about tackling the hard stuff. Over more than ten years, I've been hands-on with creating solutions that can take the heat (and radiation, and erosion) using tough materials like tungsten.I am working on everything related to plasma wall interactions and getting high-z materials ready for the big leagues in future fusion machines like ITER, JET, AUG, and W7-X. As part of an international crew of experts and a member of the International Tokamak Physics Activity (ITPA-Div/Sol), I'm here to push forward our understanding and use of materials in future fusion devicesI'm on a mission to help make fusion energy a reality - making it safe, sustainable, and a game-changer for our energy needs.
