Currently working strategy development for advanced materials research with particular emphasis on metamaterials and doctoral skills requirements for the the next decade. Previously working as director in a number of small firms has heightened my financial awareness and given me the opportunity to learn a great deal about accountancy and financial management.During my career I have had the opportunity to work in leadership positions delivering projects across a wide variety of disciplines including mathematical modelling; engineering software development; R&D; web development; oil and gas exploration and development; nuclear and renewable technologies; engineering design and the manufacture of industrial lighting. I have had the opportunity to lead some wonderful teams of dedicated people and have learnt that to get the most out any team involves inspiring colleagues to think radically whilst not losing sight of product delivery objectives and timelines. Looking ahead in engineering I believe it is important to maintain an optimistic and technically detailed vision of what the world will be like in 50 or 100 years from now. This allows strategic thinking and potentially shows us where radical technological change will create future opportunities.

DirectorIndustrial Lighting Works Ltd Nov 2012 - Mar 2017Bath, SomersetHaving visited a large number of industrial sites around the UK looking at their inadequate and inefficient lighting systems I decided that the time was right time to design a range of robust, energy efficient, high output luminaires suitable for warehouses and factories. I also wanted to support British manufacturing so we fabricated all our products in the UK. We had an large range of high bay luminaires with outputs from 10,000 lumen 70,000 lumen. I licensed production for the complete product range to a third party and am now no longer involved. -
Technical DirectorRenewable Technologies (Uk) Ltd Apr 2009 - Nov 2012Norwich, NorfolkI worked together with 3 other directors to build a solar installation company with a significant installation capability for solar thermal and solar photo voltaic systems both domestic and industrial. Latterly we diversified this company into energy efficient lighting and eventually spun off a separate lighting company (Lighting Technologies). I left Renewable Technologies to pursue my interest in design and manufacture of industrial lighting

DirectorVillaway (Uk) Ltd Jun 2005 - Oct 2012Norwich, United KingdomRunning in parallel with my other activities I managed the team developing a major holiday rentals website listing 10,000 properties around the world. We developed interactive maps and provided an information rich site with over 60,000 unique pages. All these pages were automatically updated to modify text and keywords to ensure high natural search engine placings. We also developed a website builder for allow customers to build their own personalised property web sites and developed extensive back office facilities for managing booking calendars, subscriptions and data entry. I used a combination of in house and third party suppliers for software and data services including both local and offshore companies.

I provided highly specialised engineering and planning expertise to the Shell/Nam under-balanced drilling programme both in the UK and the Netherlands. I was involved with all aspects of the process from leading classroom-based training of engineers and rig crews to development of procedures and design modifications for equipment. I also provided rig site leadership of all aspects of under-balanced drilling operations. This included supervision of live well snubbing of drill strings and completion tail pipes and the deployment of drilled liners into under-balanced gas wells. Health and Safety considerations were of paramount importance due to the hazardous nature of the projects undertaken.
