My mother is my inspiration behind what we do and why we do it. Circa 2012, she was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). This GOLIATH brings great FEAR and devastation. We knew, unless there was a miracle, she would not be with us more than a couple of years.During her late stages of the disease, it was time to bring in caregivers to help with her day to day care. In the beginning, she had AMAZING caregivers that became more like family. They engaged her and reminded her daily of her purpose, even though she was losing her ability to walk and do the things she normally loved. Then, the disease ran its course and took away her ability to move freely and speak. Her caregiver got scared of the pain of losing her and quit, leaving my mom feeling rejected while in her worst physical and emotional condition. Her days of joy were replaced by endless tears. New caregivers came in, but they never knew mom while she could still speak so they never experienced her amazing personality and sadly, they never took the time to try. Engagement was replaced with task driven personal care which was void of warmth and love. Then, they began to either stop showing up or ignoring her for hours while they watched television. Mom no longer was living, she was just existing.RetireEase was born from a mission to STOP the cycle of uncaring, mediocre task driven personal care.
