As a water sample tester, the main responsibility was to analyze water samples collected by volunteers under a microscope to determine which samples contained microplastic particles. The process of testing the samples was completed through the following steps: Filter particles out of the water sample using filtration paper, place the the filtration paper in a sealed petri dish using forceps, store the petri dish in a drawer and let the filtration paper dry for up to 24 hours, carefully place the petri dish under a microscope using forceps, slowly move the dish side-to-side and up-and-down to observe the whole of the filtration paper, perform a flame test on particles you perceive to be microplastics and observe the change in shape and color, record which samples contain microplastics into an Excel spreadsheet, report the data to the Florida Microplastic Awareness Project, dispose of sample.Additional responsibilities involve participating in conservation volunteer projects such as beach cleanups and invasive species removals by gathering and distributing supplies, checking volunteers into events, and working with volunteers to finish the task at hand; Assisted in developing a microplastics presentation for kids.
