I entered the club in fall of my freshman year, with a very basic knowledge of the stock market, but I was quickly motivated by the fast-paced discussion and intellectual regimen of the club. I added an advisor, David Salem, to our leadership team to give our club professional experience from the field of risk management and derivatives. With Salem's guidance, we initiated a covered call strategy to generate extra income for our portfolio, and shifted to a top-down strategy to allow for more tactical allocation moves. I collaborated with the executive team to introduce the Finance Wormhole Series, updated New Member pitches, and mandated Investment Accountability measures. Our average attendance increased by more than double from the beginning of my tenure as president to the end.We managed $50,000 in our portfolio, which had an open-ended fund operational structure and tax benefits of an LLP. Students who bought into the fund upon initiation could buy out of the fund upon graduation and reap the benefits as our NAV climbed. During my presidential term, our portfolio had a 23.2% return in 2019, and 18.9% in 2020. This 46.5% compounded return generated 151 basis points of alpha vs. the S&P over the same time.I am proud of the resilience of our members and commitment to the club despite the challenges introduced by the pandemic. To give us an additional level of cohesion for our club, we built a fully functional website in less than a month and embraced the transition to a hybrid model of meeting delivery.This club taught me so many lessons that extended outside of a normal class setting. It was thrilling to collaborate with the team to engage new members, rejuvenate a proud club culture, and deliver an informative product in our weekly meetings to strengthen attendance and portfolio performance. After our first line apparel order, my focus shifted to inventory management, point of sales configuration, and breakeven metrics for our company. We created targeted Facebook and Google advertisements to our audience and assessed the performance of our campaigns. In these A-B tests, we identified themes to increased reach and conversion rate for our apparel.I was provided valuable lessons in time management and task prioritization as I navigated job commitments or course workload during my time with Vurtual. We achieved just over $3,000 sales during my eight months of involvement, but I ultimately decided to step down to focus on courseload and my growing commitments on the executive team of a business organization at Miami. However, I am grateful for the learning opportunity Vurtual Apparel provided.
