Defense Manufacturing Engineer InternRolls-Royce May 2024 - Aug 2024Indianapolis, Indiana, United StatesAs a Metrology & Calibration Intern in Defense Manufacturing at Rolls-Royce I developed a broad understanding of the aviation and defense industries. I learned about turbofan and turboprop engines, component manufacturing, engine assembly, engine and component test, the calibration procedures for numerous instruments and standards, metrological traceability, GD&T, and coordinate measurement machine (CMM) functionality and programming.3 of my most impactful projects included:1) Learning the calibration procedures for pressure, voltage, vibration, temperature, humidity, and torque instruments and standards. I developed an understanding of metrological traceability through utilizing standards to adjust instruments to be within acceptable accuracy tolerances.2) Creating a CMM program using Zeiss Calypso for a vane inner ring which assesses 9 characteristics for distance, radius, position, and profile dimensions to ensure that the actual parts' features are within the tolerances according to the print definition.3) Interpolating runtimes for 280 CMM programs from 20 years of program run event reports across 15 obsolete CMMs. I wrote excel functions and macros to identify unique program names from the run report file names for a given year. And estimated program runtimes by identifying the shortest interval between generated program run reports for each unique program, while applying several filters. -
Production Engineer Co-OpToyota North America Jan 2024 - Apr 2024Huntsville, Alabama, United StatesAs a Production Engineer Co-op at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama I learned about the design and operation of machining, assembly, and test production lines for existing and future automotive products, particularly the 2.4L Turbo engine.3 of my most impactful projects included:1) Drafting a bid or spec package to present to contractors for a system of automated guided vehicles (AGVs). I used excel to perform studies of potential AGV routes with consideration to safety guidelines, part machining and assembly takt times, quantity of AGVs, AGV part capacity, and routing logic devices. The AGVs will deliver future parts between machining and assembly cells in the production line.2) Prototyping an oil funnel that seats on the probe of a balancer shaft gear backlash measuring machine using Autodesk Inventor and 3D printing. The probe would capture excess oil leaking from the balancer shaft into the machine environment, preventing contamination to improve the accuracy and repeatability of the measuring process.3) Creating process Andon screens that will display the sequence of machine operations, identify the locations of faults and material shortages, and provide efficiency and daily progress data for team members to view. -
Drivetrain MemberPurdue Electric Racing Aug 2022 - Dec 2023West Lafayette, Indiana, United StatesAs a Drivetrain Subteam Member on Purdue's Electric Racing Team (PER) I had the opportunity to learn about electric vehicles, gear design and planetary gearboxes, finite element analysis (FEA), computer aided drafting (CAD), and using product data management (PDM) software. As well as gain valuable experience in both machining and using various hand tools. Our team's objective is to build a formula-style, electric racecar to compete in yearly competitions held by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).3 of my most impactful projects included:1) Creating a MATLAB program to calculate the optimal wood and steel thicknesses for an inertia dynamometer scatter shield with consideration to the kinetic energy of components potentially ejected during testing. As well as creating a parameterized CAD model in Siemens NX that can morph according to the thicknesses as determined by the MATLAB calculations.2) Developing a ring gear mounting solution using SolidWorks and performed Ansys FEA on the new model to evaluate concerns that new steel dowels would produce abrasive wear on the aluminum upright body.3) Engaging in routine drivetrain reassemblies during testing. This experience offered me the most insight into the construction of planetary gearboxes and afforded me invaluable time to learn from my peers in the shop while turning wrenches.
