Summarizing over 26 years of painting experience is a challenge I look forward to. Like most everyone's journey in life, my journey involves aimless wandering, hopeless decisions, feeling like an imposter, stumbling, roadblocks, bad relationships, etc. You name the poor choice and I have a story about it (and that's just my professional life!). But like any existence with even an ounce of success or joy, it's fighting through those choices and actions that make the difference.If we start at the beginning of my painting career, it only happened because I could do it with absolutely zero experience. I was a young dude with too much testosterone and too much free time. It ended up becoming an extremely gratifying profession.I started painting in new construction. This is where I learned that attention to the small details, aka "prep", makes all the difference to the final product. Caulking, filling nail holes, applying primer, sanding, vaccuming, taping - just to name a few.I then worked with a few builders with some of the best carpentry and drywall craftspeople. The lesson here? If you have the luxury of painting something built with the intent of being amazing, the work is a breeze.One of the last experiences I had working with someone else was the privilege of working with a little Italian master. Seriously... straight from Italy. He had the mannerisms, terrible English, and that Italian charisma. You couldn't help but love him. You had the feeling he could create a masterpiece with his eyes closed or if his hands were cut off. He taught me how to achieve outstanding work productively.A few things of note and that apply to my personal views as well as to the type of work that I do. Never compromise on the products used - use the best to provide the best so you can stand by the best. I will not compete on price, but I am willing to fight to the death on value. Finally, even something that has been neglected and mistreated can be resurrected and made to shine with the right amount of know-how, care, and time.
