About Jared Oakes
I am a Civil Engineer in Training at BGC Engineering in Kamloops, BC. I am primarily involved in the tailings dam monitoring and maintenance at the New Afton Mine.I am a recent graduate of the Civil-Environmental Engineering Co-op program at the University of Alberta. I am strongly passionate about sustainability and environmental advocacy. I have a deep interest in contaminated site remediation, mining, and Northern Canadian affairs. These concepts were introduced to me during my most recent co-op placement with the Contaminants and Remediation Division of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada in Yellowknife, NT.My previous co-op placements were as a Quality Control Materials Technician with J.R. Paine & Associates Ltd. in Edmonton in 2021 and as a Research Intern in the Environmental Engineering Department of the University of Western Australia in Perth, Western Australia in 2022.My co-op placements have provided me with experience in the materials testing, wastewater treatment, and site remediation industries. The most valuable experience I have acquired has been the exposure to new cultures and the expansion of my worldview. I chose the co-op program to help push me out of my comfort zone and explore the world around me in ways I otherwise wouldn't of. My passions lie in exploration and connection; I hope to utilize my experience to discover the world and protect the environment.Furthermore, I am a Project Lead for the student club, Engineers for a Sustainable World- University of Alberta (ESW). ESW's Compost Heating Project seeks to utilize organic waste as a thermal heat source to extend the operating season of the Exceed Solar Greenhouse located at the UofA campus. This project, along with my enrolment in the Certificate in Sustainability, are two examples of how I incorporate sustainable action into my life.

Project Lead
The Compost Heating Project is an initiative through the student club Engineers for a Sustainable World - University of Alberta (ESW). This initiative seeks to utilize organic waste as a thermal energy source to extend the operating season of the Exceed Solar Greenhouse, located at the UofA campus. This initiative is centered around reducing food waste and promoting conversations about sustainability. The final heat system is scheduled to be installed in April 2024 and will be used as an educational and outreach tool with the larger Edmonton community. As Project Lead for the Compost Heating Project, I oversee the project activities and decisions, lead team meetings and events, and represent the project and ESW club at external events. This project has granted me experience in a leadership role while exposing me to the technicalities of composting and the utilization of the thermal energy byproduct of the composting process.
Co-Op Student
As my final co-op placement, this position exposed me to the site remediation industry. Working for CIRNAC’s Contaminants and Remediation Division (CARD), I assisted with the project management of the remediation of multiple abandoned mine sites in the Northwest Territories, primarily the Great Bear Lake sites and the Thompson-Lundmark site. Furthermore, this placement introduced me to Northern Affairs and the unique issues facing Canada's North and expanded my knowledge of Canadian culture and history. One of my primary tasks during this placement was the management of Environmental Site Assessment data using CIRNAC's in-house database system. Additionally, I led an initiative to incorporate eDNA analysis to confirm fish presence on CIRNAC projects and began the construction of an automated sampling device for eDNA. Additional tasks included, but were not limited to, reviewing technical documents and reports, reviewing daily reports to ensure compliance with EHS standards, tracking and reporting wildfire activity, and participating in site visits and remote fieldwork.
Research Intern
This role was my second co-op placement and was awarded to me by the Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship. In this role, I acted as a research intern for the Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia. This research was related to the greenhouse gas emissions from waste stabilization ponds. My primary task was the modelling of pond sludge profiles via bathymetry data and the modelling of flow paths through the treatment system. This internship exposed me to the wastewater treatment industry and some of the treatment technologies employed in Australia. Through this position, I was able to attend the International Water Association's Specialist Conference on Wastewater Ponds and Algal Technologies in Melbourne, AU, and tour Melbourne's Western Wastewater Treatment Plant.Furthermore, this position expanded my worldview by exposing me to a new country and new cultures, while allowing me to make connections with people from all over the world.
