Mechanical Engineering Co-Op
I worked in this position while finishing the final year of my undergraduate degree at Colorado School of Mines. For this position, I was working on an advanced development program that was in the early stages of the design process. The first half of my time in this position was spent converting 2D part drawings to 3D CAD models using CATIA. I was helping to build up a full model of the aircraft that we were modifying. Once, I felt confident in knowing about the design of the plane, I moved onto designing new parts for the modifications being done to the plane. Most of these parts being designed were structural parts for the plane. I also helped start to create a standard parts library in CATIA during my time on the program.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
During this summer internship, I worked as a mechanical engineer on their manufacturing engineering team in their aviation business area. Throughout this internship, I worked very close to the hangars and was able to spend a lot of time around the aircraft. Working with the manufacturing engineering team taught me a lot about the the ground support equipment and tooling used on aircraft modifications. Part of my job was to convert 2D drawings of various tooling and ground support equipment to 3D CAD models using SolidWorks to help plan for future projects. I also learned the process of using a 3D scanner to take scans of aircraft or equipment, post process the files, and convert them into usable 3D CAD models. I scanned existing tooling and used the created CAD models to design compatible ground support equipment. With this project, I designed the new tooling in SolidWorks, and used GD&T standards to create engineering drawings. I then worked with a local machine shop to have the parts made. After the parts were manufactured, I was part of the assembly and testing process of the new ground support equipment. Towards the end of my internship, I was able to assist with creating and programming a statistical process control program using MATLAB.
