As a national security professional, historian, diplomat, analyst, educator, and Chinese linguist, I bring a unique background to the workplace, with hands-on experiences from serving around the globe that complement my academic preparation. Dr. Jared S. Pendleton is currently a Senior Advisor at the State Department’s Foreign Service Institute (FSI) and adjunct professor of National Security Studies at Utah Valley University. From 2017 to 2021 he served as Principal at the American Institute in Taiwan's Chinese Language and Area Studies School and the Board Chair for Fulbright Taiwan. Prior to his posting in Taiwan, he was a Special Advisor to the Dean of the School of Language Studies at FSI. He previously served as FSI's Regional Training Coordinator, coordinating training and professional development opportunities for the State Department’s local and American staffs at regional training centers and diplomatic posts across the globe. As a career Foreign Service Officer (diplomat) for 12 years, Jared served in Guangzhou, Frankfurt, Washington DC, Taipei, and Beijing, where he was the lead analyst of Chinese leadership politics for the U.S. embassy. He then served as an Associate Coordinator in FSI’s Political Training Division where he was a Course Chair for classes such as Congressional Relations; Religion and Foreign Policy; Promoting Human Rights and Democracy; Arms Control and Nonproliferation; Intelligence and Foreign Policy; and Political and Economic Tradecraft.He holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of California (Riverside) and wrote his doctoral dissertation on Soviet advisers and “Sovietization” in Mao’s “New China” during the 1950s. Jared is also a distinguished graduate of the United States Naval War College, where he earned a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies while on a detail assignment from the Department of State in 2010.
