I do structural analysis work on existing telecommunication towers. This includes tower foundation analysis. A cell carrier (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) will request a structural analysis when they want to add equipment to a tower to better their coverage in the area. I will enter all the structural data such as steel member sizes, bolts, antenna loading and position, coaxial loading and position, and all necessary data into an finite tower analysis program called TNX Tower. This program will output results which I can use to write a summary report outlining everything that went into the analysis.Occasionally, these towers will need to be modified to adequately support the loading that a cell carrier would like to add to the structure. I design these modification packages if they are possible. Occasionally, some towers cannot be modified due to age or type of construction. In this case, I must issue the customer a failing structural report outlining why the tower of concern has met its maximum capacity or has lived its design life. We also design, detail and manufacture telecommunication towers at Ehresmann Engineering, Inc. Another aspect of my work day is doing all the quality control checks on the Monopoles, which is a type of communication tower, that are manufactured here. Before these monopoles leave our yard to be galvanized, I will go through several checklists and visual checks to ensure that monopole is manufactured correctly.
