I have also been thinking heavily about a web hosting platform and want to get into the web hosting space, similar to Digital Ocean or Linode. I want to combine my knowledge of full stack development, IT, automation, virtualization, and self-hosting into a product to enable the next generation of web hosting providers. It is my ultimate goal to build out a software stack that can replace it for the modern data center.It has several requirements:- Run on a standalone server or workstation as a home server (think, cPanel standalone + ASUSTOR)- Run on a professional server or multiple servers as a web hosting platform, complete with billing and management functionality (similar to WHM) that enables reselling of server infrastructure.- Be dual licensed as open source (home server) and a proprietary license (professional)- Provide 1-click simple installation of popular web applications and git repositories, with minimal effort to scale them.- Offer feature parity with Digital Ocean (professional) and ASUSTOR's OS.- Be fully configurable, so that even the home server can work as a workstation, and you can reallocate resources as needed- Completely manageable from a nice Web UI (no SSH required)- Built on top of Debian Linux- Can orchestrate local and cloud resources and scale accordingly, with "cloud fail over" / migration when resources run out.- Support modern file systems (ZFS) and S3 compatible distributed storage - Even a home server should be able to bring in money by reselling compute, bandwidth, and storageIt's an ambitious, 5-10 year, goal, and right now I'm doing it alone.
